Get Close to God

As most of us know, it’s possible to go through life calling ourself a Christian without ever actually following Jesus. But if we want to actually follow Christ, we have to get close. We have to know Him for the Lord and Savior He is, and we have to be close enough to Him to hear His voice as He leads us. #scripture #faith

We’ve been talking about following Jesus this year – kissing yes-itis, people pleasing, and the ways of this world goodbye and following Christ into fuller life.

A couple weeks ago we looked at what following actually looks like, and one of the pieces we talked about is getting close to God.

As most of us know, it’s possible to go through life calling our self a Christian without ever actually following Jesus.

But if we want to actually follow Christ, we have to get close. We have to know Him for the Lord and Savior He is, and we have to be close enough to Him to hear His voice as He leads us.

Not just that, but we have to get even closer, asking Him to fill us with His Holy Spirit so that when it comes to God’s heart and our heart there is virtually no distinction. Christ is in us and we are in Christ. (See John 15)

Remain in me, and I will remain in you. For a branch cannot produce fruit if it is severed from the vine, and you cannot be fruitful unless you remain in me. – John 15:4 (NLT)

How do we do that? We’ll talk about that as we go, because it’s a never ending process of laying down our lives so that we may live. And there’s no one way to do it other to make Jesus our Savior and to discover how much He really loves us.

But how do we do that in one post? So instead, we’ll let that roll around in our hearts and minds, we’ll ask Him in, and we’ll take steps together in community to encourage each other. And we’ll know that God is at work and He is good.

I hope you’ll share in the journey with us.

Follow – Kissing yes-itis people-pleasing and the ways of this world behind to follow Jesus into fuller life

  1. This speaks to my heart as I have been meditating, praying, and focusing on this too. Less of me more of Him. Please God not man. Just wrote a post for tomorrow’s Faith Barista that speaks to God inviting us into His heart…..and immersing ourselves in The River of God. HS overwhelming us with His love. So glad I stopped by this morning! Hugs friend.

    1. Aww, Renee, your comment made me so happy today. I’m so glad you stopped by and always love one of your hugs.

What you say is SO true. It’s so hard for us though, isn’t it? Because the voice of people is so much louder than God’s voice if we let it be. And we usually hear that voice of shame at the same time saying, “If you were a good Christian you wouldn’t want to upset them.” So wrong! And of course when we fix our eyes on Jesus we see He wasn’t afraid to disappoint people all the time if what they wanted was wrong (even if it was the wrong time, or wrong motivation, or whatever).

So thankful for our conversations and can’t wait to read your post! Love you, friend!

  2. Yes, so glad you’ve laid it out straight that “getting close to God” is a never-ending process and has so many facets to it. Looking forward to exploring them with you in the weeks and months ahead. The verse that keeps coming to mind every time we bring up this idea of getting close to God is James 4:8a, “Come near to God and He will come near to you.” It’s encouraging to remember that God doesn’t expect us to cross an ocean to get to Him. We only have to turn our face to Him and call His name and He’ll cross all the barriers just to get to us.
