Dose of Hope: John 6:27

John 6:27 - Do not work for food that goes bad; instead, work for the food that lasts for eternal life. This is the food which the Son of Man will give you, because God, the Father, has put His mark of approval on Him. #dosesofhope (printable memory verse card at the link)

Kim emailed me this passage with a note “Just saw this verse in the movie The Gospel of John. It’s a nice one to put as a reminder.”

Jesus spoke these words the day after He miraculously fed the five thousand with just five small barley loaves and two small fish.  The crowd had followed him to Capernaum, hungry for more food, not faith. So Jesus lovingly set them straight.

(Jesus said) Do not work for food that spoils, but for food that endures to eternal life, which the Son of Man will give you. On Him God the Father has placed His seal of approval. – John 6:27 NIV

And then, because we are saved by grace and not works, Jesus clarified for the crowd.

The work of God is this: to believe in the one He has sent. – John 6:29

I think we can be like that crowd of people sometimes, seeking God for what we want from Him and what He can do for us, not because of who He is and what He’s already done for us. Thank God for His grace and His word.
