Let me just put this straight out there: you deserve the best. Again, when I say the best I’m not talking about a nice car in your driveway or a closet full of whatever people are wearing these days.
When we talk about pursuing more of God’s best and less of the mess, were asking how can we be a greater force of God’s love in this world. And when I say you deserve the best, I’m saying you deserve to know that you are worth loving.
In my experience leading online small groups for women there’s a theme I see women struggling with over and over again: feeling that taking care of ourselves – physically, emotionally, mentally, spiritually, creatively – is not important, significant, or of service to God. Nothing could be further from the truth.
Jesus said Himself that we are the light of the world. We’re that light when we let Him shine through us. When we’re stressed, overworked, under-rested, on edge, and feeling burnt out we’re not usually shining. There’s a reason they call it burning the candle at both ends – pretty soon that light’s going to go out.
Not just that, but God calls us to love him with all of our hearts, all of our souls, and all of our strength, and to love our neighbors as ourselves. But we can’t love our neighbor as ourselves unless we know how to love ourselves. If I can’t see myself as someone of infinite value to our Father, I can’t see my neighbor is someone of infinite value either.
We must accept God’s love for ourselves and allow Him to reshape our view of ourselves if we’re going to extend that same deep love to others.
So love – real love – starts with God. But it starts with God changing us. We matter to Him. You and me. Knowing we’re loved is our first step to seeing a little more heaven on earth.
